Making difficult decisions is a common challenge in the Christian life. Often, our decision-making processes can be influenced by sinful motives, leading us astray from God's will. In this article, we will explore a general method for approaching tough decisions biblically, seeking God's wisdom and grace in every choice we make.
Prioritize Prayer and Seek God's Guidance:
When faced with a decision, the first step is to prioritize prayer and seek God's wisdom. We must humble ourselves before Him, acknowledging that He knows what is best for us. By inviting God into the decision-making process, we open ourselves to His guidance and direction. Seeking advice from godly and wise Christians, such as pastors or elders, can also provide objective and scripturally grounded guidance. In certain situations, consulting experts outside of the faith who possess relevant expertise may prove helpful.
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
Psalm 25:4-5: "Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long."
Three Principles for Making Tough Decisions:
Glorify God:
The primary focus of any decision should be to glorify God. This involves aligning our choices with the principles outlined in the Ten Commandments and seeking God's kingdom above personal gain. We should ensure that our decisions support faithful worship and obedience to God. By centering our choices around God's glory, we acknowledge His sovereignty and prioritize His will above our own.
1 Corinthians 10:31: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
Colossians 3:17: "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Matthew 6:33: "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Benefit Others:
In making tough decisions, we must consider how they will impact others, particularly fellow Christians. We ought to think about how our choices will affect their worship, growth in faith, and general well-being. Choosing the option that strengthens the church and demonstrates love and concern for others is essential. By prioritizing the benefit of others, we reflect the selfless love of Christ and contribute to the unity and well-being of the body of believers.
Philippians 2:3-4: "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others."
Galatians 6:10: "So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith."
1 Corinthians 10:24: "Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor."
Bring Glory to God Before the World:
As Christians, our decisions should bring glory to God before the world. This means making choices that reflect our commitment to Christ, even if it means sacrificing personal rights or desires. Our goal is to shine as positive examples of committed Christians, fostering a good reputation for Christ and the church. Through our actions, we can point others toward the transformative power of a relationship with Jesus.
Matthew 5:16: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
1 Peter 2:12: "Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation."
Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
The challenge, making tough decisions in a manner that aligns with biblical principles requires a conscious effort. By internalizing these principles and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can approach decision-making with wisdom and discernment. It is crucial to resist the worldly mindset that prioritizes material well-being and instant gratification. Instead, we should be patient, submissive to God's will, and willing to endure discomfort or loss for the sake of making wise and biblically grounded decisions.
As we navigate the complexities of decision-making, let us remember to prioritize prayer, seek God's wisdom, consider the well-being of others, and bring glory to God in all that we do. By doing so, we can live a life that honors God and draws others closer to Him through our choices and actions.
